Your gums are the support structure for your teeth and maintaining healthy gums is vital for healthy teeth. Peridontal therapy is the prevention and treatment of gum disease maintaining the supporting structures of your teeth, helping them to last a lifetime.

Peridontal disease is the inflammation and infection of gums and tissue surrounding the teeth. If left untreated periodontal disease can result in the loss of affected teeth. It develops when bacterial deposits known as plaque are not properly removed from the teeth through cleaning, brushing and flossing. The plaque then hardens into a rough material most commonly known as tartar. The risk of gum disease can be minimized with a strong dental hygiene routine of brushing, flossing and professional cleaning.

The bacteria in plaque produces toxins which irritate the gums making them tender, red, swollen and with a tendency to bleed. If the periodontal disease isn’t treated at this point the toxins can go on to destroy the supporting tissues around the teeth forming pockets that house more plaque. If the disease progresses without treatment the supporting bone can become permanently damaged and teeth can become loose or be lost.

If caught in the early stages the treatment for periodontal disease is the removal of plaque and tartar through a process known as scaling and root planning. The pockets around the tooth are cleaned and root surfaces smoothed. In more advanced cases surgical treatment may be necessary to remove tartar from the deep pockets around the teeth. The pockets then need to be addressed, root surfaces cleaned and gum tissue rearranged to make sure it’s easier for you to keep your gums and teeth healthy and clean.
